Founder’s Note

A Tiny Instrument Born from Silence, Crafted to Bring Calm into a Noisy World.

Zenzula began with a single unforgettable sound: an ancient African Mbira heard during a pilgrimage to Thiruvannamalai, home to the ashram of Ramana Maharishi, in South India. What began as a personal fascination gradually evolved into years of experimentation with sound, recycled materials, and handcrafted design, pursued during evenings and weekends while working in corporate Mumbai. Over time, the instrument evolved into something far more meaningful: a simple, meditative companion capable of bringing calm, presence, and emotional connection into everyday life. Today, every Zenzula is still handmade slowly in our Mumbai studio using reclaimed and upcycled materials, carrying its own unique character, warmth, and soul. More than an instrument, Zenzula is an invitation to pause, slow down, and rediscover silence through sound.

About Us

A Lifelong Conversation With Sound.

Zenzula began with a simple fascination: how could such a small instrument create such a powerful experience? Inspired by the ancient African Mbira and handcrafted in Mumbai, Zenzula creates musical instruments that are designed to be approachable, expressive, and rewarding for people of all ages and backgrounds. We believe that making music should not require years of training or technical expertise. Sometimes all it takes is curiosity, a pair of thumbs, and a willingness to listen. Every instrument we create is handcrafted using reclaimed and sustainably sourced materials. What begins as wood, metal, and imagination is gradually transformed into an object that can accompany moments of creativity, reflection, storytelling, learning, and play.

Over the years, that fascination evolved into a growing family of instruments, each with its own voice and personality. Some draw inspiration from traditional African designs, while others emerged through experimentation with materials, tunings, and form. Together, they represent an ongoing exploration of sound that continues to this day.

Today, Zenzula instruments can be found in homes, studios, classrooms, therapy rooms, and performance spaces across six continents. Yet each instrument is still shaped by hand in Mumbai, where the story began.

Inspired by one of humanity's oldest musical traditions, they are made for modern life.
